Bio
Betty Liang Spahr was born and raised in Houston, TX. She began studying violin at age 5 with Joyce Durfee-Gertsman and continued on to study under Vincent Frittelli at the University of Texas at Austin (Go Horns!) where she was a Violin Performance Major.
Mrs. Spahr was an original member of the Texas Young Virtuosos and performed with them all over Houston, the White House, and on two European tours including performances at the Paris Conservatory and opening for the Holland Music Festival at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Mrs. Spahr was also a part of "Mozart's Monkeys" (a string quartet) formed of peers from Memorial High School who performed at various engagements in the Houston area from 1988-1996. She has also been a part of the UT Symphony and Houston Civic Symphony.
Betty Spahr has been teaching privately since 1993 and has developed her own methods using Suzuki and traditional curriculum while incorporating sight-reading from the very beginning. Betty served as the Elementary Violin Specialist at Hunter's Creek and Memorial Drive Elementary Schools in SBISD from 2004-2007 before focusing on her own teaching studio which spans a wider age range. She enjoys teaching private lessons, group lessons, coaching string quartets, preparing students for region/all-state, and performing gigs.
Currently, Mrs. Spahr spends her time with her two boys (Isaiah and Ian) and husband (Matthew) when she is not teaching. She has been working on her by ear skills by learning how to play songs from Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, PJ Masks, and other kid shows.
